Stray dog follows bikers over 1,100 miles

In China, a homeless dog latched onto a group of cyclists and the plucky canine ran along with them for their 24-day ride. The cyclists embraced their energetic, little companion, feeding it along the way.

By Bo Gu, NBC News

BEIJING ? A stray dog has become China?s newest celebrity after latching onto a group of cyclists and traveling more than 1,100 miles over at least 12 mountains, some as high as 13,000 feet, in China?s southwestern Tibetan Plateau.

The homeless dog, nicknamed Xiao Sa, finished her 24-day journey from China?s Sichuan Province to Lhasa, Tibet on May 24.

?At first we didn?t think about adopting her at all,? said 22-year-old cyclist and college student Xiao Yong in an interview with China Central TV. ?But we were shocked by her perseverance. She followed us [from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province] to Litang [a town in Sichuan province with a 2.6 mile altitude]. We then decided to make a cage for her when we had a steep road going downhill.?

The long march began with a chicken leg Xiao Yong tossed to the puppy when he started his bike ride in early May. The little mutt followed the cyclist team after that and became part of the cycling group.

They came up with the nickname ?Xiao Sa? by combining the term ?xiao,? which means ?little,? with the last syllable of Lhasa, the administrative capital of Tibet and the cyclists final destination.

?She once ran 37 miles in one day, going uphill. We were very impressed by Xiao Sa?s persistence, that inspired us all the way till our destination, the Potala Palace [in Lhasa, Tibet],? said Xiao Yong. ?I?ll take Xiao Sa back home. I think she?s taking me as her owner now.?

Lu Bo, another team member, said the little white fur-ball was an inspiration to the whole team. The dog ?made us so happy. Once a few of our team members lagged behind, she ran from hill top to the bottom, to bring these guys to the rest of the team. She injected power into us,? said Lu.?

She is now with her new owner, Xiao Yong, in Wuhan, capital city of the southern Hubei province.

And like a true celebrity, Xiao Sa has even opened her own Weibo account, China?s most popular Twitter-like service. It is called ?GoGoXiaoSa,??where fans can check out her latest photos and whereabouts. And she already has over 82,000 followers.

Russian security firm spots cyber supervirus that tops Stuxnet

Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Labs says the complexity and targets of the virus ? which is infecting computers in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East ? imply its creator is a government.

A new supervirus, which the Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Labs discovered and named 'Flame,' designed to scoop up secret information like an 'industrial vacuum cleaner' is infecting computers in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East.

The new supervirus, which Kaspersky discovered and named "Flame," is one of the most complex items of malicious software ever conceived ? many times more sophisticated than the notorious Stuxnet worm ? and could well be a purposeful "cyberweapon" directed against Iran, the firm said?in a statement?late yesterday.

Flame is "actively being used as a cyberweapon attacking entities in several countries," Kaspersky said in a statement. It is "one of the most advanced and complete attack-toolkits ever discovered.? The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date."

According to Kaspersky, the majority of infected computers are in Iran, followed by the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. It said the virus has probably been active for at least two years, but has not been detected until now due to its "extreme complexity."

"Over recent years the danger of military operations in Cyberspace has been one of the most serious issues of information safety," Yevgeny Kaspersky, the firm's director, is quoted as saying in the statement. "Stuxnet and Duqu were parts of one circuit of cyber attacks; their application raised concerns of a potential unleashing of global cyber war. Harmful Flame, most likely, is next stage of that war. It is important to understand, that this cyberweapon can be easily turned against any state."

The firm said it found the virus accidentally, after it was hired by the United Nations?International Telecommunications Agency to trace the source of unexplained glitches and deletions of sensitive information in the agency's Middle East operations. A spokesman for Kaspersky told journalists yesterday that the virus's creator "remains unknown"; but it is probably a government, not only because of its huge size and complexity, but also because it does not appear to be designed to steal bank account information or perform the sorts of tasks usually set by private criminal hackers.

Stuxnet, which reportedly?wreaked havoc on Iran's nuclear program, was designed to disrupt and destroy sensitive industrial systems. The new virus, which Kaspersky admits it does not yet fully understand, appears to evade detection, bury itself deeply, and continue siphoning off vital data for years.

Iran's official Maher Labs, a division of Iran's telecommunications ministry,?said on its website today?that "tools to recognize and clean this malware have been developed and, as of today, they will be available for those [Iranian] organizations and companies who want it."

Among the key characteristics of the virus, Maher said, are "distribution via removable medias and local networks, network sniffing, detecting network resources and collecting lists of vulnerable passwords, scanning the disk of infected system looking for specific extensions and contents, creating series of user?s screen captures when some specific processes or windows are active, transferring saved data to control servers, and bypassing tens of known antiviruses, anti malware and other security software."

The virus can infect computers running any Windows-based operating system, it said.

"We can clean this virus now, but we are still analyzing and discovering what it's capable of," says Vitaly Kamluk, chief malware expert at Kaspersky. "It took years to detect and understand Duqu and Stuxnet. These were highly profesional tools that evaded us for a long time. Flame is the newest, but there's no doubt that worse things may be out there. You can count on it."

Intellectual Property Law ? Copyrights and Trademarks | Tourist ...

Many businesses are constantly creating original intellectual property, this can be in the form of anything from articles, web pages to videos. As you are putting considerable time and resources into producing your original material it is understandable that you would also want to protect it. This is where copyright law comes into play.

Copyright will keep all of your original work protected from being used without your permission. If you discover that someone has breached your copyright and gone on to use your work without asking you first, you will have the right to take legal action against them to seek financial compensation.

If your work has a copyright you will be able to license it out and reproduce it in anyway you like. This means that you can receive an income from your copyrighted material.

In the UK you do not have to register to get a copyright. Copyright is created automatically as soon as an original work is made. A work has to be original to be granted a copyright, which means it must be significantly different to any other existing work. This is a qualitative evaluation as opposed to a quantitative measurement. To ensure that people are made aware that a work is protected by copyright you might want to consider adding a ?©? mark to any original material that you create along with the name of the person that made it and the date of which it was made.

Some industries such as the music industry are protected by copyright collection societies. These societies will often deal with licensing of copyrighted material on behalf of the copyright owner.

If you decide to licence out of your copyrighted material, you need to make sure that you have written up a firm copyright licensing agreement. This should include the terms in which you are licensing out the material, where it can be used and how long for. You should expect to get a fee for licensing out any copyrighted material and you should detail the amount in your agreement. This is known as a royalty.

You should ensure that you licensing agreement is written up by a legal professional to ensure that it is highly secure and that you don?t leave yourself open to being exploited.

You may also wish to consider registering a trademark for your company. This should be a sign that people associate with your business and could be an image, logo, phrase or any other thing which identifies your company. If someone copies your trade mark you will be able to take legal action against them. Sometimes even if you haven?t registered your trade mark you may be able to get compensation if another company uses your logo, as it is illegal to get trade by using a logo which is already associated with another company. When this happens it is known as ?passing off? but it can be difficult to prove.

If your company invents new products, you may wanted to consider getting them patent protected. A patent protects an invention for a specific amount of time so that no one else can make the same invention and sell it.

South rises again to beat North in Tri-County All-Star football

?

Jonathan Hulyo loves a man-to-man defense.

The McCaskey quarterback says that type of defense allows him to showcase his arm and lets his skill-position teammates show off their speed. And with a man defense mandated in the Tri-County All-Star game, Hulyo was the brightest of all of the stars.

Hulyo threw for a game-high 328 yards and three touchdowns to lead the South to a 30-23 win over the North Saturday in the 11th Tri-County All-Star Football Game in Manheim.

"It's the kind of offense that we ran at McCaskey, and it's great against a man defense," said Hulyo, who fired touchdown passes of 68, 15 and 36 yards. "We have a lot of skill guys that have a lot speed and we took advantage of the defense."

The South, which held a 16-13 halftime lead, found itself trailing after the North began the second half with a two-yard plunge from Lancaster Catholic's Brandon Hollister (9-48). Manheim Central's Bryant Myer added a 27-yard field goal that started the fourth quarter.

"We weren't concerned about trailing in the second half," South coach John Manion said. "These players have been in games before where they were trailing. It wasn't out of reach because our defense kept us in it."

And Hulyo took advantage of his defense's stops.

Hulyo hit fellow McCaskey teammate Quashaun Davis in stride for a 36-yard touchdown pass that evened the game at 23-23 with 5:15 left to play. The South defense forced the North to a three-and-out on the next series to set up the game-winning drive.

Facing third and 10 at the North 44, Hulyo made the biggest play of the game with his legs when he scampered for 10 yards. He was injured on the play and watched from the sidelines as Lampeter-Strasburg's Jordan Groff took a quarterback trap 29 yards to put the South ahead 30-23 with 2:38 left.

"I wasn't disappointed at all that I wasn't on the field," said Hulyo. "That's why you have great teammates in an all-star game. Groff made a helluva run."

The North had one last shot to tie the game with a fourth-and-eight at the South 45. Lancaster Catholic's Andrew Dzurik (6 of 19, 143) fired a pass to the end zone that was picked off by Solanco's Tyler Stitz to seal the win for the South.

"It was an exciting game," Manion said. "To coach that many good kids, from that many good programs, was an honor."

Manheim Central's Caleb Walton put the North on the board first with an eight-yard run in the first quarter to make it 6-0. The South answered when Hulyo hooked up with Wilson's Jake Morgan (3-131) on a 68-yard bomb. Blaise Glover's extra point gave the South a 7-6 lead with 5:38 left in the first quarter.

Glover made it 10-6 when he booted a 43-yard field goal to begin the third quarter. The North regained the lead when Lancaster Catholic's Andrew Dzurik found Lebanon's Alex Kuhn for a two-yard scoring pass.

Glover (4-88) and Hulyo struck again for the South with 10 seconds left in the opening half. Hulyo floated a fade in the right corner of the end zone where Glover out-jumped a defender and tapped one toe in bounds to put the South ahead 16-13 at halftime.

(AP) ? Luke Donald replaced Rory McIlroy at No. 1 in the rankings for the third time in 10 weeks, successfully defending his title in the BMW PGA Championship. It also lifted his hopes of finally capturing a major at the U.S. Open next month.

Displaying his trademark consistency with his driver and putter, Donald won the biggest event on the European Tour by four strokes. The Englishman shot a 4-under 68 at Wentworth on Sunday for his fourth straight round under 70, leaving him at 15 under.

It was Donald's second victory of the year, following one at the Transitions Championship in March on the PGA Tour. Last year at Wentworth, he took the top spot in the world from Lee Westwood when he beat Westwood in a playoff.

"There's something sweet about going 12 months and still being No. 1," Donald said. "It's an indication that I'm doing the right things."

Donald held a two-shot lead over Justin Rose when he began his final round in sunny conditions and said he felt tense in the opening stretch of holes, culminating in a bogey 6 on the long fourth hole. A birdie for Rose at the same hole drew the players even at 10 under. With Peter Lawrie and Paul Lawrie within two shots at that stage, a tight finish seemed likely.

Donald made sure that didn't happen. He rediscovered his putting touch to birdie four of the next seven holes, including a 30-footer on No. 10 that drew cries of "Luuuuke!" from the gallery and left Rose three shots behind.

Donald had the luxury of strolling down No. 18 with a four-shot cushion. He suddenly had the aura of the best player in the world.

Rose missed a short birdie putt at the last hole to finish with a 70 and tied for second with Paul Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion who had a 66 ? tied with George Coetzee for the lowest round of the day.

"There were no loose shots coming down the stretch. And with his short game and him making 20- and 30-footers, he's tough to beat," Rose said, referring to his Ryder Cup colleague.

Not only did a sixth victory in 15 months earn Donald $950,000, it also gave him a big boost before the U.S. Open in San Francisco.

"I feel I am getting closer. Every time I get a success like this, it adds to my confidence. These victories are key to bringing that confidence to the majors," said the 34-year-old Englishman, who topped the money lists both sides of the Atlantic in 2011. "It's putting four rounds together like I did this week."

It's the sixth change at the top of the rankings between Donald and McIlroy in 12 weeks. McIlroy missed the cut at Wentworth after a second-round 79.

Donald became the third player, after Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie, to retain the title at this tournament, and it marked the first time he has won an event twice in a row.

I feel that when I'm playing well, I'm hard to beat. But I think there could be 20, 25 guys who would say that," Donald said.

Scores were significantly lower than Saturday, when the field had to contend with wind of up to 30 mph.

Peter Lawrie birdied the last hole to leave him alone in fourth place. South Africa's Branden Grace, a three-time winner on the European tour this year, was a shot further back in fifth.

Wentworth course designer Ernie Els, who apologized for his expletive-laced outburst about the state of the greens Saturday, tied for seventh with Marcel Siem and Francesco Molinari. Siem drew perhaps the day's biggest cheer when he made a hole-in-one at No. 2.

Outsourcing: A Boon For Businesses

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Nil Sparrow

Today as due to globalization, businesses - either large or small, operate all around the world but businessmen believe that for success of any business, it should be operated in large metro cities rather than in a small town. As in, for small town, you may find it difficult to obtain new customers. So to overcome this problem people have come up with outsourcing the business mail and telephone to a Mail Forwarding company, such companies are also known as a virtual office where company outsources certain office work such as mail handling and telephone answering, which are mainly related to clients or customers. As in virtual offices are mainly located at very well known addresses which result into creation of good impression of organization in eyes of their clients as company has been established in a prestigious address. Other than that, business also has professional call handling capabilities.

Individuals who are having businesses related to travelling whole day have it really hard when it comes to mailing; they often come home with their work burden and still have spare time to check out important mails from among many. In addition to it, they even have to reply to that mails which ultimately ends up in making them sick of doing work - which ultimately harms the business. So to overcome this problem, mail forwarding service is good option for businesses. It helps them to monitor the mail, filter out junk mail and gives them total control of the process and keeps them at peace that their important mail is somewhere safe.

Mail forwarding services are also a way to save money that would otherwise be spent on shipping charges. Mail forwarding is used to keep a track of your mail and separate the important mail from rest all. Using mail forwarding services can save a significant amount of time, money, and human resources which otherwise is not possible. In addition, mail forwarding services can save the long distance and international calls from all business locations by paying only a flat rate for their services every month.

Mail forwarding services are useful as the business don?t need to hire the extra number of employees for attending telephones and mails. So the businesses have low cost related to selection and hiring. As work is outsourced there is no need for providing training to employees which results into huge amount of saving for business. If businesses have their own office, it requires very well designed office and equipments with latest technology due to which outsourcing mail forwarding service will surely avoid expenses!

LI Salvage Yard Owner John Doxey, Accused Of Dumping Automotive

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) ? Motor oil, anti-freeze and hydraulic oil may be good for your car, but they?re bad for the environment.

A Long Island business owner is accused of dumping thousands of gallons of the fluids right into the ground, CBS 2?s Carolyn Gusoff reported.

John Doxey, 44, the owner of a salvage yard in Glen Cove, was arrested Monday and accused of allowing thousands of gallons of toxic automotive fluids to seep into the ground just feet from a waterway.

?You can?t just decide that you?re gonna cut corners because you don?t feel like paying and you don?t feel like taking the extra step and the extra time that it requires to properly dispose of these fluids,? Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said.

Glen Cove Police were tipped off by a nearby merchant. They said Doxey?s salvage yard was slicked with toxic fluids, petroleum, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid and antifreeze ? literally pouring at times from large trucks.

As workers dismantled trucks to salvage parts, police said they had no regard for the toxic mess they allegedly left behind. The salvage yard is now padlocked closed. Doxey pleaded not guilty to endangering public health and polluting charges.

The yard sits on the Glen Cove Waterway, which empties into the Long Island Sound. It is just blocks from Glen Cove?s recently decontaminated waterfront.

?This is an individual who is known to work outside the law to make money with no remorse and without any worry about what he does to the environment,? Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi said.

If convicted, Doxey faces up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $75,000 per day for each day of dumping. He is due back in court on May 23.

Officials believe they caught the dumping before it got into the ground water, but runoff is still a concern.

In addition to criminal charges, Doxey will also be slapped with a cleanup bill for the site, which could reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, officials said.

The Department of Environmental Conservation said the owner recently moved from another site in Glen Cove and the soil will have to be tested there as well.

(AP) ? The Cannes Film Festival got its biggest shot of celebrity adrenaline yet on Tuesday, even if it was only half the dose some were expecting.

Brad Pitt arrived at the festival with the stylish, hardboiled film "Killing Them Softly," which he produced and stars in. The film, an adaptation of a George V. Higgins crime novel directed by Andrew Dominik, was screened Tuesday in competition for the Palme d'Or.

While many were wrangling with the film's audacious juxtaposing of a story of violent back-stabbing criminals with an overt political subtext, others were being gently let down by Pitt: No, Angelina Jolie wasn't with him, as she's preparing for a role, he said. And their highly anticipated wedding has no date set, he said in a press conference.

But "Killing Them Softly" left much for discussion. Pitt stars as a kind of fixer who organizes the necessary retribution of two thieves (Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn) who rob a poker game of gangsters. Woven throughout are billboards, radio broadcast and televised speeches of U.S. President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush.

Though the book ("Cogan's Trade") takes place in the 1970s, the film is set in 2008, during the presidential election and the financial crisis. At one point, Pitt's character pronounces: "America's not a country, it's a business."

"We were certainly at the apex of the mortgage loan debacle," Pitt said on the beginning of the project. "I felt that I was reading a gangster film and it wasn't until the very end that it coalesced for me as far what the direction of the film is pointing to overall ? that this microcosm is actually saying something about the macro world."

Pitt said he doesn't intend "Killing Them Softly," which is scheduled for theatrical release this September, to be read as his views or to be fodder for the upcoming election season.

"I always feel that crime films are about capitalism," said Dominik, the director of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." ''It's the only genre where it's perfectly accepted for all the characters to be motivated by a desire for money only."

The Pros and Cons of Public and Private Cloud Computing Options

Up in the cloud! If you?re hesitant about adopting cloud computing services into your company?s IT infrastructure, you?re not alone.? Data security is a leading concern for business people all over the world, and especially those who are associated with companies that routinely handle sensitive information.

The main choice you will face will be whether to go with a public or private cloud computing service. And as with everything else, each has its own set of pros and cons.

PUBLIC CLOUDS

PROS: Simplicity and efficiency are two of the main advantages public clouds offer. An off-site third party provider hosts and manages the system. ?Users connect to the system via web applications or services. There is no significant investment in hardware or software.

CONS: Since third party providers are in charge of storing and maintaining the data systems, companies have less control.? And because public clouds are based on Internet connections, data transfer rate is limited to that of the Internet service provider (ISP) which is usually no more than 10mbp.

PRIVATE CLOUDS

PROS: Private clouds are built from software that runs on a piece of hardware at the company. This means that the organization has more control over their data and that the cloud?s performance is significantly better than a public one. Transfer rates can be as fast as 100mps or more.

CONS: Private clouds are more expensive because they require both hardware and maintenance personnel. They also require system administrators. And since a private cloud is hosted on-site, the organization needs to provide adequate power, cooling and maintenance and may also run the risk of data loss due to physical damage of the unit.

If you are a business owner who?s unsure about whether public or private clouds are right for your company, then Austin Mobile Computer Repair can help. They can assess your technology needs and offer expert advice on which type of cloud computing service would best suit your organization. When you need service and advice you can trust, contact us!

Ron Paul winds down White House quest, but is it over?

Ron Paul, the ideological underdog who generated intense passion among supporters of his 2012 campaign, is trading his shot at the US Republican nomination for something more within reach: outsize influence at the party convention.

His announcement Monday that he is suspending all active campaigning clears the way for the Republican flagbearer Mitt Romney, but it also comes with a caveat; he intends to make waves at the Republican nominating confab.

"Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process," he said, highlighting his dogged strategy of pursuing the all-important delegates to the convention in Tampa, Florida in late August.

"We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that liberty is the way of the future."

It won't win him the nomination, but his delegate presence could be substantial enough to disrupt the event which formally crowns the nominee who will face off against President Barack Obama in November.

And should he ultimately win enough of them, Paul or a surrogate could earn a treasured speaking slot at the convention in order to push his platform of limited government.

Paul's "effort to acquire delegates has always been to have a say in the platform and party rules," Linda Fowler, a professor of government at Dartmouth College, told AFP.

"I think he has enough now to accomplish that goal."

As a longshot contender Paul failed to win any of the 39 contests in states which have picked their election standard-bearer, but he has always acknowledged that his campaign has been a bit like tilting at windmills.

"Do I believe I can win? Yes. Do I believe the chances are slim? Yes, I do," the congressman from Texas told CBS News in March.

Some of the stances of the unorthodox Paul, which include legalizing drugs, slashing military spending, ignoring Iran's nuclear program and abolishing the US Federal Reserve, are anathema to many Republicans.

But his campaign, with a loyal and impassioned following which has focused on his stout defense of constitutional principles and individual liberties, electrified some young voters turned off by years of war and skyrocketing deficits, and his Republican rivals were forced to take notice.

"I don't care about power, but I care about influence," he said earlier this year. "And the best way you can influence a nation and move a nation is by translating this into political action that is successful."

Paul, a 76-year-old obstetrician, has spent most of the last 36 years in Congress, and twice before ran for president, in 1988 as a Libertarian and four years ago as a Republican.

He has 99 delegates, well behind Romney's total of 949, according to a count by RealClearPolitics. A candidate needs 1,144 delegates in order to be declared the nominee.

Romney could wrap up the nomination May 29 with a win in the Texas primary, but the Paul campaign insists his delegate tally is being underreported and that Paul's ground game in states like Missouri, Maine and Nevada have helped them secure additional delegates.

Slightly built, professorial in style, Paul doesn't exactly look the part of presidential contender, and was given little real chance of winning the party nod.

But party elders have been careful not to trample his ideas in case he makes a scene at the convention -- or if he bolts altogether and launches a third-party presidential bid.

With the Libertarian Party cementing Gary Johnson as its candidate last week, however, many experts see an outside run by Paul as no longer viable.

"Running as an independent would require Paul to mount ballot-access efforts in each of the 50 states," a commitment that would be "difficult and very expensive," said John Pitney, politics professor at Claremont McKenna College.

Professor Michael Traugott of University of Michigan said the campaign of "ideological candidate" Paul had always been about principle, and that Paul will work to get one or two key planks -- perhaps on fiscal policy -- into the party platform.

"This campaign fought hard and won electoral success that the talking heads and pundits never thought possible. But, this campaign is also about more than just the 2012 election," Paul said in his statement.

Romney's two main challengers, religious conservative Rick Santorum and former House speaker Newt Gingrich, dropped out in April and May, respectively, and despite Paul's persistent campaign Romney shifted weeks ago towards the general election showdown with Obama.

Building a Business Culture to Deliver the Best Customer Service ...

A strong business culture that is aligned with superior business goals outperforms their competitors by light years. These are the organizations who have figured out how to delight their customers and even make them smile. After all isn?t the Zappos? motto ?powered by service? incredibly motivational which delivers a message of trust and reliability? Zappos has worked hard to develop their culture resulting in a high percentage of return customers; a much more lucrative business model than having to find new clients.

Deciding on what a business wants to accomplish is part of its core values and related to its overall culture. Customer service should be one of the top priorities, and the commitment to pleasing customers and delivering ?out of the box? services should never be discouraged. When building a culture all employees need to participate, all levels of management needs to encourage and inspire, and business owners need to place themselves as role models to encourage the process.

As businesses grow they may evolve and change since each employee brings their own values and practices to an organization, but the key is to search for employees who have the same passion for excellence and empower those employees to act on their own and go out of their way for the sake of their company. Think of the Ritz Carlton employees who are empowered and constantly encouraged to treat each customer as an individual and react accordingly with each situation ? whether it be sending out for a bouquet of flowers for a couple?s private anniversary celebration to a new bed pillow if a guest complains about it being uncomfortable.

How employees act and what they do should all be written out and shared by all employees, but assuming a company strives to build a positive business culture the following culture elements should be considered:

  • A commitment to employees which provides superior training to empower company personnel to do the right thing for customers on their own without having to refer to a manual and providing the employee with all of the tools needed to make their own decisions for the welfare of the organization.
  • Building the company?s integrity by always following the Golden Rule and honoring return policies, special promotions, and treating both customers and other employees as if each person is truly treasured and respected.
  • Effective leadership guides the basis for a strong culture and the motivational tools needed to help employees understand the company?s role as a positive business model.
  • Having the company focused on customers and fulfilling their needs and wants without just focusing on the profit of each business exchange.
  • Retaining valuable employees by rewarding them with higher salaries, bonuses, rewards and recognition for jobs well-done.
  • Communicating with customers and displaying customer service phone numbers and email addresses on every page of their websites so customers know an organization is always willing to listen to a customer if there is a problem. Remember most customers won?t tell a company what went wrong; they just leave and go on to your competition. Make it convenient for an unhappy customer to find you, and act accordingly to resolve the problem.
  • Don?t make customers go through a maze of automatic questions when they are calling for customer service or make customers wait for any extended period of time. Where IRS can take their time and really aren?t too worried about how taxpayers feel concerning the waiting time, their business is quite unique, but otherwise unpopular.
  • Hire the best employees and don?t limit the time they should be on the phone or spend in person with a customer who needs help. Instead ask for public feedback and written communications from customers about their experiences. Grade employees on their service and what customers say about them ? use rewards for the very best. Recognize employees to their peers which will then encourage other employees to excel.

Have pride in your organization and develop its culture to be synonymous with honesty, teamwork, communication, innovation and a leader in customer service. The examples set forth by the foremost leaders promise a successful and profitable business when we strive to be the best of the best.

UnEasyshare: Kodak's now-defunct, Rochester-based nuclear reactor

ImageReady for this unsettling Kodak moment? It seems the one-time imaging powerhouse held a decades-long secret deep in a bunker below Building 82 on its Rochester campus. The now vacant facility, a concrete-shielded chamber built in 1974, was once home to a californium neutron flux multiplier (CFX) or, in layman's terms, a small nuclear reactor as recently as six years ago. Certainly, that's not the technology one would normally associate with an outfit built on the foundations of photography, but according to recently released documents, its three and a half pound store of enriched uranium was used primarily for neutron radiography -- an imaging technique -- and chemical purity testing. The site's long been shut down and the radioactive material in question carted off with federal oversight, but for denizens of that upstate New York territory, alarming news of the reactor's existence has only just surfaced. Before you cast Kodak the evil side eye, bear in mind post-9/11 policies forbade the company from making the whereabouts of its small reactor widely known, though earlier scientific studies did make reference to the CFX's existence. It's an eye-opening glimpse into the esoteric machinations of private industry and the deadly dangers that lurk below your feet.

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

If you'd been by the shore of the Sumida River in central Tokyo this past weekend, you would have noticed that it was glowing a distinct shade of blue. That's because Panasonic decided to kick off the first-ever Tokyo Hotaru (fireflies) festival by sending 100,000 EVERLED light bulbs down the river, both to mimic fireflies as well as to pay homage to a Japanese tradition of floating candles on the water. Before you cringe too much at the thought of the environmental impact, rest assured that Panasonic minimized the footprint of its aquatic LED parade. All the bulbs ran on solar power (presumably, charged during the day) that kept Evolta batteries fed inside, and the entire lot was scooped up in a large net afterwards. We love the exhibition as a large-scale demo of sustainable lighting -- you may just want to avoid fishing along the Sumida's shoreline for awhile in case you catch a straggler.

Update: We've found a video of this spectacular event -- check it out right after the break.
